French series Lupin to return to Netflix this summer

Lupin NetflixThe hit French mystery thriller, Lupin, will be returning to the screen in summer 2021.

According to a report by Deadline, the next five episodes of the first season will drop on the streaming service later this year. The first five episodes premiered on January 8 and the show became a worldwide phenomenon, rising to Number 1 in Netflix’s Top 10 across more than ten countries. The show became the first French series to make it into Netflix’s top ten list in the U.S. and has ranked number one in a number of territories.  The French original series from Gaumont Télévision is created by George Kay (Killing Eve) in collaboration with François Uzan (Family Business).

The series stars Omar Sy (The Intouchables, X-Men: Days of Future Past) in the lead role, as a gentleman thief inspired by the exploits of the legendary Arsène Lupin.

Based on the immensely popular novels by French writer Maurice LeBlanc, who created the character in 1905, Lupin is set in Paris and focuses on the adventures of professional thief Assane Diop, the only son of an immigrant from Senegal who had come to France to seek a better life for his child. The first five episodes, Dans L’Ombre D’Arsène (In The Shadow Of Arsène), introduces Diop who, as a teenager, “saw his life upended when his father died after being accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Now, Diop is out to avenge his father, and outwit pretty much everyone along the way.”

Given that this first batch of episodes ended on a massive cliffhanger, fans of the show can at least look forward to getting some resolution for this when the next batch air later this year, along with more exciting, slick adventures through the streets of modern Paris. The five new episodes are directed by Ludovic Bernard (The Climb) and Hugo Gélin (Love at second sight).

Watch out for Lupin part two this summer on Netflix.
