Game of Thrones prequel Tales of Dunk and Egg in development

Tales of Dunk and EggTales of Dunk and Egg, another prequel to Game of Thrones, is in early development at HBO.

According to a report by Variety, the series adaptation will be comprised of one-hour episodes based on the fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin, which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) 90 years prior to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire.

There are three novellas in this series published so far:

  • The Hedge Knight in 1998

  • The Sworn Sword in 2003

  • The Mystery Knight in 2010

The three novellas were then collected and published together as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in 2015.

It is still too early to tell whether this project would go to series as several ideas for Game of Thrones prequels have been considered before, including the previously announced prequel pilot that starred Naomi Watts as well as several other related projects that had been put in development but stayed there.

Currently, the only one that is moving forward is House of the Dragon, will be based on George R.R. Martin’s expansive book about the Targaryen dynastyFire & Blood. The series will be set a few hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones.

So far, the series has received a 10-episode order from HBO and casting has begun over the summer. The show was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal with Game of Thrones veteran director Miguel Sapochnik and Condal serving as co-showrunners as well as executive producers with Martin and Vince Gerardis. Sara Lee Hess will be writer and executive producer.

House of the Dragon has so far cast Paddy Considine as as King Viserys I, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower.
