WATCH: Flora and Ulysses trailer

Flora and UlyssesDisney has released the trailer for Flora and Ulysses, its upcoming family feature.

The film is based on the novel Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures by Kate DiCamillo (The Tale of Desperaux), which won the Newbery Medal for 2014.

Here is the official synopsis of the movie:

“The film follows 10-year-old Flora, an avid comic book fan and a self-avowed cynic, whose parents have recently separated. After rescuing a squirrel she names Ulysses, Flora is amazed to discover he possesses unique superhero powers, which take them on an adventure of humorous complications that ultimately change Flora’s life–and her outlook–forever.”

Flora & Ulysses stars Matilda Lawler, Alyson Hannigan, Ben Schwartz, Anna Deavere Smith, Danny Pudi, Benjamin Evans Ainsworth, Janeane Garofolo and Kate McCucci. It was directed by Lena Khan and produced by Gil Netter. The film’s screenplay is by Brad Copeland. Katterli Frauenfelder and James Powers served as executive producers.

The trailer reminds us that Disney also owns Marvel by integrating Flora’s love for superheroes with images of familiar Marvel characters such as Captain Marvel, Black Panther, Miss Marvel, and Iron Man. The short clip also gives a sense that this charming family film will have the same energy and breathtaking action sequences as a full-blown superhero film, which may or may not be to this adaptation’s advantage.

But the cast, particularly Lawler as the charming lead, all look like they are enjoying themselves and the CGI for Ulysses is not too distracting. The book was an interesting take on family and friendship despite its fantastical elements and if the film stays true to the heart of the story, it will have succeeded. This might be a slightly different take on the source material but it is bound to be a delightful and heartwarming adventure all the same.

Flora and Ulysses will premiere on February 19, 2021 on Disney+.
