Breaking Down All the Marvel Studios Announcements From Disney Investor Call

Secret Invasion– TBD

Now we get to the material that fans didn’t know was coming. These are all new projects never before announced to the public.

Rumors were circulating about a Nick Fury show, and now we know that it will be about. It is a team-up show with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) that will adapt the 2008 crossover event comic, Secret Invasion, as a mini-series on Disney+ and involve a group of Skrulls who have infiltrated key positions of power in the MCU. Feige said it will connect to a future MCU film so there is a good chance this will have ties and connection to events happening in Captain Marvel 2. Given the status of the comic book, there is a good chance this will include a lot of big names from the MCU in parts yet to be cast.

Ironheart– TBD

Well, this was unexpected. The fact that no word had broken out about this before is interesting given the status of the character and that they even cast the part. Riri Williams will be played by Dominique Thorne (If Beale Street Could Talk) and will be a character who has created the most advanced suit of armor seen since Iron Man. This will also tie into future MCU films, but it isn’t quite sure which ones exactly.

The sheer mention of her name is sure to get a certain subset of fandom upset, with some fans pointing to her low comic sales (even though most characters do because of the model of monthly comics). It is another step in Marvel Studios realizing that just because a title may not be the biggest among comic book fans, doesn’t mean it can’t be a massive hit with mainstream appeal. Remember before 2014, the Guardians of the Galaxy were considered niche. Now they have their own theme park ride in Disneyland and it is safe to say audiences know them better than they do the Fantastic 4.

Armor Wars– TBD

Tony Stark’s worst fear comes true: what happens if his tech falls into the wrong hands. With Tony gone, it is up to his old pal Jim Rhodes aka War Machine to pick up the pieces.

The comic book storyline this is taking the name from is one of the most famous Iron Man stories, and it is a fitting story to tell in the wake of Tony’s death. It is also nice that after all these years for Rhodey and War Machine to get their own story. We could also see other MCU heroes pop up. The comic it is based on involves Scott Lang’s Ant-Man and Captain America so maybe one or two episodes could bring in Paul Rudd or Anthony Mackie to help give War Machine some assistance.

Justin Hammer, played by Sam Rockwell in Iron Man 2, is a plot thread left over from Phase 1 who could easily come back as a villain in this series. We could also see tech-based villains not yet seen in the MCU like Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, and Spymaster. The other big one we could see is Ezekiel Stane, son of Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) who was the first villain in the MCU. If he was in the show it would be a nice connection to the first Iron Man movie and help bring everything full circle.

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special– 2022

Marvel is producing their first holiday special. James Gunn is returning to write and direct the project and will film in the middle of production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. They confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will hit in 2023, and this being released the holiday prior to that means we can expect this in either November or December of 2022. James Gunn has hinted it is inspired by his unironic love of the Star Wars Holiday Special, so combined with the Guardians irreverent tone there certainly will be a lot of laughs, fun cameos, and a few special appearances (fingers crossed for Howard the Duck).

I Am Groot– TBD

Similar to the Forky Asks a Question shorts on Disney+, Marvel Studios is getting their own version with I Am Groot. It will be a collection of shorts that involve Baby Groot with various Marvel characters.

Blade– TBD

No news here, reconfirming that Mahershala Ali is Blade and that the storyline is coming together. Announcements like director, writers, and supporting cast should be coming soon. I just like reminding people Blade is joining the MCU.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania– TBD

Most likely set for 2023, Peyton Reed is hard at work on the next installment in the Ant-Man franchise. Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer all will return as Scott Lang, Hope Van Dyne, Hank Pym, and Janet Van Dyne respectively. Kathryn Newton (Freaky, Blockers) is joining the cast as Cassie Lang (Emma Fuhrmann played the role in Avengers: Endgame). Jonathan Majors was also confirmed as Kang the Conqueror, whose presence hints at some major plot ramifications to come.

Fantastic 4– TBD

The biggest news was saved for last, and it blew the roof off of everybody’s home. The first family of Marvel comics, the Fantastic 4, are finally coming to the MCU. We got our first look at a logo, along with the confirmation that Jon Watts, the director of the MCU Spider-Man films, has signed on to direct the adaptation of the Fantastic 4.

While there have been three different incarnations of the Fantastic 4 in live-action (1994, 2005, and 2007 films, and 2015 reboot), fans have never been happy with the Fantastic 4 on-screen treatment. Now in the hands of Kevin Feige and Marvel fans, excitement is at a fever pitch. What is interesting is that Ant-Man director Peyton Reed has long been a champion of the Fantastic 4 and almost helmed their film back in 2005. So if another MCU director like Jon Watts is at the helm, why is Peyton Reed not doing it? Is his schedule too busy? Did Watts have a more relevant pitch for the MCU?

Fans now eagerly wait and anticipate who will be cast as the iconic four heroes, and other major supporting characters. The arrival of the Fantastic 4 also means we could see Doctor Doom (possibly hinted at in Armor Wars?), Silver Surfer, and Galactus (who could both appear in cameo roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 or Thor: Love and Thunder). With the announcement of Kang the Conqueror joining the MCU this is something we all knew was coming eventually but to have it be a reality is something else.
