Breaking Down All the Marvel Studios Announcements From Disney Investor Call

Ms. Marvel– Late 2021

One of the newest characters to the Marvel Comics universe, Ms. Marvel – real name Khamala Khan – immediately broke out as a fan favorite and has become as important to the foundation of Marvel’s identity in the 21st century as the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and Hulk were to the company in the ’60s. By her first appearance, it felt like she was destined for the big-screen treatment, and now, only seven years after his first comic book appearance she will make the jump to live-action. First in her own series on Disney+ (makes sense to have a character primary aimed at teenagers get her start in a streaming show, the way many kids prefer to consume media) before making the jump to the feature films. Newcomer Iman Vellani was chosen after months of searching, and Marvel brought some footage to show.

What fans were not expecting was a first look at the show. While it was mainly a series of interviews with b-roll over the comics, the end showed some first footage from the series. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life), Meera Menon (Farah Goes Bang), and Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (Saving Face) are all signed on to direct episodes of the series.

Eternals– November 5, 2021

This one was the lightest on news, mainly just highlighting the still impressive cast and the vast scope of the film. It will span thousands of years, making it one of Marvel’s most ambitious films yet.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness– March 25, 2022

The final installment in the Marvel Multiverse trilogy (beginning with WandaVision and the upcoming Spider-Man sequel), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters on March 25, 2022. Elizabeth Olson is already in London preparing to film, as she reprises her role as Scarlet Witch. Joining her and Benedict Cumberbatch are stars of the original film Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Also joining the cast is Xochitl Gomez as the MCU incarnation of America Chavez. America Chavez’s superpower is to create portals to other dimensions, so she will certainly be of good use to the good Doctor on his journey and help set up a potential Young Avengers project rumored to be in the wings.

This is also the first time Marvel has confirmed that Sam Raimi would be directing the project. Sam Raimi is obviously no stranger to Marvel superheroes, as he helped usher in the modern-day superhero film with his Spider-Man trilogy. With the recent rumors of Tobey Maguire appearing in the upcoming third Spider-Man movie, one has to wonder if he will also show up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and allow Raimi to direct his incarnation of the web-head one last time.

Thor: Love and Thunder– May 6, 2022

Taika Waititi returns to helm Thor: Love and Thunder, moving its release date from February 11, 2022, to now kickstarting the summer movie season in that prime Marvel first week of May release date that was previously held by Black Panther 2. This also allows Marvel to space out its films. Originally Eternals, Spider-Man, Thor, and Doctor Strange all would have opened within five months of each other.

Fans already knew Chris Hemsworth would return as Thor alongside Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Natalie Portman returning as Jane Foster, who will wield Mljonir and become the Mighty Thor. Christian Bale was signed on to a villain role but nobody quite knew what the part would be. Now we have confirmation he is Gorr, the God Butcher.

Gorr is an ordinary alien, whose mother, mate, and children die, causing him to think gods could not exist. When he learned gods did in fact exist but did not help those in need, as his dying family, he vowed to kill them all. He uses All-Black the Necrosword to kill the gods. It is a sword crafted by Knull, the god of the Symbiotes from the head of a death Celestial. If this weapon is adapted to screen, it would give this villain a lore connection to Spider-Man, Venom, and the Eternals franchise.

Black Panther 2– July 8, 2022

In a somber note of the event, Kevin Feige took time to acknowledge the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman. How he was a great friend to many of the people at Marvel and how his death impacted all of them. Saying his take on the character was iconic and transcends any version of the character, they have decided not to recast the role. Ryan Coogler is hard at work on the sequel now and hopes to delve into the rich culture of Wakanda and various characters introduced in the first film. Black Panther 2 now takes the old Captain Marvel 2 release date.

Hawkeye– Late 2022

Jeremy Renner returns as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye and will be joined by Kate Bishop. After months of speculation and pretty much confirmed by set photos recently released, Kevin Feige officially confirmed that Kate Bishop would be played by Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld. The rest of the cast includes Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) as Kate’s mom, Fra Fee as Kazi, and Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez aka Echo. Echo in the comics also donned the Ronin armor, the outfit Hawkeye wore in Avengers: Endgame so there is a chance he might be passing on two mantels in the MCU.

They said late the following year, and it appears Marvel wants the Disney+ shows to fill in the gap between the films, so it is safe to say that Hawkeye could arrive in September or October of 2022, leading into the release of the next MCU film.

Captain Marvel 2– November 11, 2022

Nia DeCosta signed on to direct Captain Marvel 2 earlier this year, and now Marvel announced a new release date. Moving from summer of 2022 to fall of 2022. Joining Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers on this adventure will be Carol Danvers’s biggest fan and another character from Marvel comics who wielded the title of Captain Marvel. These two characters are ones fans will know pretty well by the time Captain Marvel 2 hits theaters.

Iman Vellani will reprise her role as Ms. Marvel, and so will Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, who fans will meet in WandaVision (a child version of her was played by Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel). This means Carol Danvers will be joined by two of her biggest supporting players from the comics and makes Captain Marvel 2 a mini crossover between two Disney+ series.

She-Hulk– 2022

She Hulk will follow Jennifer Walters as a superhero lawyer and is being described as a superhero comedy. Rick and Morty writer Jessica Gao is the lead writer, with Kat Coiro (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) directing a number of episodes.

Tatiana Maslany has officially been confirmed to be playing Jennifer Walters aka the She-Hulk. Tim Roth, who played Emil Blonsky aka The Abomination from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk will return (this will mark 14 years since he last appeared in the MCU), and of course, Mark Ruffalo will be in the series as the Hulk. Feige hinted that because Walters specializes in superhero court cases, you don’t know what characters may pop up. Combined with the recent rumor that Charlie Cox will appear in the next Spider-Man film, one can hope this is where we will see the return of Matt Murdock aka Daredevil.

Moon Knight– 2022

Described as an action-adventure in the spirit of Indiana Jones, Moon Knight will delve into the many identities of this complex vigilante. The series will also dive deep into the roots of the Egyptian background of the hero’s world, a whole new visual pallet opening up.

What was interesting is that they did not confirm Oscar Isaac was playing Moon Knight, meaning the deal might not quite be as done as fans were expecting.
