House of the Dragon 2House of the Dragon, the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel focusing on the members of House Targaryen, will begin filming in a few months.

This update was revealed in a blog post by WarnerMedia CEO, Jason Kilar, after Warner Bros. made the unprecedented and controversial decision to release its entire 2021 slate – including highly anticipated films such as – simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. While many key figures are in the entertainment industry are reeling from this announcement and trying to figure out how to deal with the consequences, some news has surfaced about upcoming projects.

“P.S. Principal photography starts on the next Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon, in a few months. Look out for dragons overhead!”

House of the Dragon 1As previously reportedHouse of the Dragon will be based on George R.R. Martin’s expansive book about the Targaryen dynasty, Fire & Blood. The series will be set a few hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones. It is one of the fortunate Game of Thrones shows that will be moving forward as opposed to the previously announced prequel pilot that starred Naomi Watts as well as several other related projects that had been put in development when the flagship series concluded last year.

The show recently cast Paddy Considine (The Outsider, Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys I, the ruler of Westeros after Aegon’s Conquest and father to Rhaenyra and Aegon II, who would later wage a civil war known as the Dance of Dragons.

So far, the series has received a 10-episode order from HBO and casting has begun over the summer. The show was co-created by Martin and Ryan Condal with Game of Thrones veteran director Miguel Sapochnik and Condal serving as co-showrunners as well as executive producers with Martin and Vince Gerardis. Sara Lee Hess will be writer and executive producer.
