Wonder Woman 1984 heading to theaters and HBO Max on Christmas Day

Wonder Woman 1984 posterWonder Woman 1984 will soaring onto our screens this Christmas!

Warner Bros. officially announced that the highly-anticipated superhero sequel, Wonder Woman 1984,  will be released simultaneously in theaters and on the HBO Max streaming platform in the U.S. on December 25, while debuting theatrically in international markets a week earlier starting on December 16. The film will be available for a month on HBO Max in the U.S. included at no additional cost to subscribers.

WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group, Chair and CEO Ann Sarnoff explained this decision:

“As we navigate these unprecedented times, we’ve had to be innovative in keeping our businesses moving forward while continuing to super-serve our fans…This is an amazing film that really comes to life on the big screen and, working with our partners in the exhibition community, we will provide that option to consumers in the U.S. where theaters are open. We realize that a lot of consumers can’t go back to the movies due to the pandemic, so we also want to give them the option to see Wonder Woman 1984 via our HBO Max platform.”

Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich said:

“We appreciate how patient audiences have been and given the great anticipation around Wonder Woman 1984 we are grateful to be able to make this terrifically entertaining movie widely available in these challenging times.”

The sequel to the 2017 Wonder Woman sees the return of director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot as the titular heroine. Set in the 1980s, the film will focus on Diana Prince confronting two new enemies: Maxwell Lord and The Cheetah.

Wonder Woman 1984 also stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as The Cheetah, Pedro Pascal as Max Lord, Robin Wright as Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta. An earlier trailer for the film was released during DC FanDome last August.

Jenkins went on Twitter to share the news and to encourage fans to watch it in theaters if they can:

“The time has come. At some point you have to choose to share any love and joy you have to give, over everything else. We love our movie as we love our fans, so we truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season.

Watch it in theaters, where it is made safe to do so (check out the great work theaters have done to make it so!) And available in the safety of your home on HBO Max where it is not.

Happy holidays to all of you. We hope you enjoy our film as much as we enjoyed making it.”

Wonder Woman 1984 will open in U.S. theaters and premiere on HBO Max on December 25.
