WATCH: Chaos Walking first trailer

Chaos Walking posterSci-fi adventure Chaos Walking gets its first trailer and sees Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley on the run in a dystopian world.

Chaos Walking is an adaptation of the young adult book series by Patrick Ness, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Ford. Set in a world inhabited only by men, whose thoughts are always discernible in a stream of images, words, and sounds called Noise, an enigmatic stranger named Viola arrives and throws everything into turmoil.

The unique premise of the story will prove challenging to execute on film but the trailer already gives us glimpses of how the male characters’ thoughts are visible and audible. Only women’s thoughts are not exposed in such a way but the reason for the absence of women is still a mystery.

In an interview with IGN, Ridley talks more about her role:

“Viola sort of acts as the catalyst for the whole thing, the scout ship crashing on New World, and her being seen by Todd really is the beginning of the entire story.”

She also provides some details about Mikkelsen’s role as David Prentiss, the villain of the piece:

“His rule is sort of control and needing people to believe a story that fits with the narrative they’re all trying to tell themselves. He has a massive, massive advantage in that he can control his Noise and no one else can…He’s basically the total block in Viola’s plan, which is that he cannot let her reach her goal, because it would mean the control he has over his town would be done.”

The film was directed by Doug Liman (Mr.& Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow) and also stars Nick Jonas, Mads Mikkelsen, Cynthia Erivo, Demián Bichir, David Oyelowo, Ray McKinnon, Óscar Jaenada, and Kurt Sutter.

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

“In the not too distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by ‘the Noise’ – a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola’s life is threatened – and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet’s dark secrets.”

Chaos Walking is scheduled to premiere on January 22, 2021.
