Staged renewed for season two

Staged Renewed Season 2David Tennant and Michael Sheen will be returning for a second season of Staged.

According to a report by Variety, the BBC has ordered another season of the comedy written by Simon Evans and Phin Glynn centered on two actors stuck in lockdown who try to rehearse for a postponed West End production of Luigi Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author.

Staged stars the Good Omens duo of Tennant and Sheen (or Sheen and Tennant?) playing increasingly exasperated fictional versions of themselves trying to cope with quarantine while their beleaguered families have to deal with their restless shenanigans. The show also stars Tennant and Sheen’s real-life partners, Georgia Tennant and Anna Lundberg while Evans, Lucy Eaton, and Nina Sosanya rounded out the supporting cast.

Staged season one was comprised of six short episodes and also featured several guest stars including Samuel L. Jackson, Adrian Lester, and Dame Judi Dench.

Deadline reports that Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) will be joining the second season as the assistant to Sheen and Tennant’s American agent. The second season will tackle the two stars trying to figure out their place in “virtual Hollywood.” The BBC released a sneak peek of the show on Twitter with Sheen, Tennant, and Schwartz having a misunderstanding about Sheen’s contact details and missed auditions for high profile projects.

Sheen expressed excitement about the new season, saying:

“It’s been so great to see how much people enjoyed the first series. Seemed like the laughs were much appreciated. It made us really excited about taking it further and going in some surprising and hopefully enjoyable directions this time.”

Georgia Tennant was similarly enthusiastic:

“The prospect of getting my husband back into employment alongside the divine Ben Schwartz and the hairy, Welsh legend that is Michael Sheen all makes me very happy to be back for series two!”
