WATCH: Over the Moon featurette

Over the MoonNetflix has released a short, behind-the-scenes clip from its upcoming animated adventure, Over the Moon.

As previously reported, the movie boasts of an impressive creative team, directed by Glen Keane, the legendary animator behind Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Beast from Beauty and the Beast, and the title characters of Pocahontas and Tarzan. Over the Moon is co-directed by John Kahrs (Paperman) and the script was written by the late Audrey Wells. The film features music from Steven Price (Gravity) and songs by Christopher Curtis, Marjorie Duffield, and Helen Park.

The new clip features the making of the song “Rocket to the Moon” which is performed by Cathy Ang, who plays the heroine of the piece. Keane talks a little bit about the film and the importance of music in the story, saying:

“When you have an emotion to communicate and you’ve told it in every possible way and you still have something more to say, have your character sit down and sing it.”

Producer Peilin Chou also shares the story of how Ang nailed the song in the first take.

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

“Fueled with determination and a passion for science, a bright young girl builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary Moon Goddess. There she ends up on an unexpected quest, and discovers a whimsical land of fantastical creatures. Directed by animation legend Glen Keane, and produced by Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou, Over the Moon is an exhilarating musical adventure about moving forward, embracing the unexpected, and the power of imagination. The film stars Cathy Ang (Fei Fei), Phillipa Soo (Chang’e), Robert G. Chiu (Chin), Ken Jeong (Gobi), John Cho (Dad), Ruthie Ann Miles (Mom), Margaret Cho (Auntie Ling), Kimiko Glenn (Auntie Mei), Artt Butler (Uncle), and Sandra Oh (Mrs. Zhong).”

Over the Moon launches on October 23 on Netflix.
