ICYMI: New ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Updates Have Been Announced

Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive for Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon this morning. In the article, we not only get to see the first fully rendered computer-generated image of the movie but are also given some cast and crew updates as well. In the image (see article feature image), we see Raya with her steed Tuk Tuk.

Here’s who we have crew-wise so far:

  • Producer: Osnat Shurer
  • Directors: Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada
  • Co-Directors: Paul Briggs and John Ripa
  • Co-Writers: Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim

They’ll be joined by a team of 400 WDAS artists to help make the film become a reality. Due to the current global public health crisis, they’ll be working remotely.

In addition to the new crew updates, EW has also added that Star Wars alumna Kelly Marie Tran has stepped in to voice Raya (originally Cassie Steel). Tran is the first Southeast Asian actress to lead a Disney animated feature film. She joins fellow cast member Awkwafina who was announced as the voice behind the character Sisu at D23 Expo last year.

The movie is set in a fictional kingdom called Kumandra and is inspired by Vietnamese, Thai, Cambodian, Malaysian, and Filipino cultures. A Southeast Asia Story Trust was assembled for the movie. Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon is currently scheduled to arrive on March 12, 2021. Is it on your watchlist? Let us know in the comments below!
