WATCH: Ammonite trailer with Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan

AmmoniteAmmonite is the upcoming period drama starring Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan.

The film is inspired by the life of British paleontologist Mary Anning (played by Winslet), who became known for finding fossils in the cliffs along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in Dorset. The story will focus specifically on the romantic relationship she develops with a young geologist named Charlotte Murchison (played by Ronan) as they spend time together gathering fossils along the coast.

The film also stars Fiona Shaw, Gemma Jones, James McArdle, Alec Secăreanu, and Claire Rushbrook.

Here is the official synopsis of the film:

“1840s England, acclaimed but overlooked fossil hunter Mary Anning and a young woman sent to convalesce by the sea develop an intense relationship, altering both of their lives forever.”

Ammonite was directed by Francis Lee (God’s Own Country) based on a screenplay he wrote. Iain Canning, Fodha Cronin O’Reilly and Emile Sherman produced the film along with See-Saw Films, BBC Films, and the British Film Institute. The film was set to have its global premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before the latter was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was also supposed to be screened at the Telluride Film Festival in September 2020 but the event has since been cancelled as well. The latest news is that it will finally have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2020.

As reported by Variety, Ammonite will be closing the British Film Institute London Film Festival on October 17. The 64th BFI London Film Festival will take place on October 7 to 18 and the event will follow a hybrid online-physical model.

Tricia Tuttle, festival director, shared this statement about the film:

“Francis has the ability to place love stories of breath-taking intimacy within a rich socio-political context, always with a delicate touch, and here offers reflections on class difference and the erasure of women from scientific history. In Saoirse Ronan and Kate Winslet, Ammonite features two enthralling and gifted leads; Kate in particular, who appears in almost every scene, gives a fearless and complex performance.”

Ammonite will open on November 13.
