DC FanDome: Zack Snyder’s Justice League Trailer

After years of anticipation, the first trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League has hit the web courtesy of DC FanDome.

At long last, fans get the first look at the first trailer for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which will be arriving on HBO Max in 2021. No release date is set, but that is a reveal for another day. What was a pipe dream years ago is now a reality, as fans will soon see a new version of Justice League different from the 2017 film.

Zack Snyder debuted the trailer at DC FanDome with special guest appearances from Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Ray Fisher, Ezra Miller, Gal Gadot, and Patty Jenkins to ask Snyder questions.

Snyder confirmed that the film will be split up into four one hour segments that will air on HBO Max, and eventually will be packaged as a film on the site.  International viewers who don’t yet have HBO Max need not worry, they are working on a release strategy for the film.

The trailer is set to Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, a needle drop Snyder used before in his adaptation of Watchmen. A callback and also an obvious meta-joke about the idea of this cut of the film being released as sort of a miracle. Although the tone of the song doesn’t quite really fit with the aesthetic or feel of Snyder’s Justice League.

Fans get a glimpse of Darkseid, some new scenes, and a color palette closely resembling the first Justice League trailer that was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016 before Snyder left the project. The fight with the Amazons features the original design of Steppenwolf that was featured in the extended cut of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Superman is glimpsed in the black suit he wore in the comics after he was resurrected from the dead.

One major takeaway from the trailer is that it appears to continue Snyder’s obsession with showcasing the heroes’ powers while highlighting destruction. Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) saves Iris West (Kiersey Clemons) but we see behind them the crashing car hit and blow up causing a major explosion in the background, that could have left people hurt. This is similar to Snyder’s treatment of Superman where he goes out of his way to save the individual who matters to him (Lois) while also allowing massive destruction that leads to the death of many others. We also see the sort of gruesome death of Silas Stone (Joe Morton) from a Mother Box blowing up, that is similar to how Snyder visualized Doctor Manhattan’s disintegration in Watchmen.

Zack Snyder has been vocal this will be more in tone with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, meaning it will be much darker than the theatrically released film. He has called it ‘adult’ while others have called it needlessly violent and dark, sometimes trying a little too hard to be mature. Snyder seems to be influenced more by Watchmen than any other DC comic. Audiences and critics didn’t respond well the last time Snyder did this approach with these characters, but will this time be different? Time will tell.
