WATCH: Lovecraft Country sneak peek

Lovecraft Country poster 2HBO has shared a short clip from the first season of Lovecraft Country during this year’s Comic-Con.

The sneak peek features the characters Atticus (Jonathan Majors), Montrose (Michael K. Williams), and Leti (Jurnee Smollett) searching for answers in a museum late at night and trying to decipher the truth behind a large statue. When moonlight leads them into a secret chamber with enigmatic inscriptions, Atticus senses that the ancient mystery they are investigating may be even more complex than they first realized.

As previously reported, the series is based on the 2016 dark fantasy horror novel that explores the intersection between H.P. Lovecraft’s horror fiction and the dangerous levels of racism in the United States during the 1950s. The novel masterfully tackles real-life horrors while also adding fantastical elements, making for an intriguing and relevant combination of genres.

Here is the official synopsis of the show:

“From showrunner and executive producer Misha Green, HBO’s new drama series Lovecraft Country is based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. The ten-episode series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.”

Other executive producers of the show include Jordan Peele, J.J. Abrams, Yann Demange, David Knoller, Bill Carraro, Ben Stephenson, and Daniel Sackheim.

The series is produced by Monkeypaw Productions, Bad Robot Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

The rest of the cast includes Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, Abbey Lee, Jamie Chung, Jada Harris, Jordan Patrick Smith, Jamie Neumann, Erica Tazel, Mac Brandt, Tony Goldwyn, Jamie Harris, and Demetrius Grosse.

Lovecraft Country will premiere on August 16 on HBO.
