WATCH: Lovecraft Country official trailer

Lovecraft Country poster 1HBO has released the official trailer for its upcoming horror drama, Lovecraft Country.

The show comes from Misha Green, the creator of the period drama Underground, about the Underground Railroad. Green serves as show runner and also wrote the pilot episode, which was directed by Yann Demange.

The series is based on the 2016 dark fantasy horror novel that explores the intersection between H.P. Lovecraft’s horror fiction and the dangerous levels of racism in the United States during the 1950s. The novel masterfully tackles real-life horrors while also adding fantastical elements, making for an intriguing and relevant combination of genres.

Here is the official synopsis of the show:

“From showrunner and executive producer Misha Green, HBO’s new drama series Lovecraft Country is based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff. The ten-episode series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures that could be ripped from an H.P. Lovecraft paperback.”

This unforgettable road trip takes the group to a town on which H.P. Lovecraft supposedly based the location of many of his stories. The trailer already gives us a glimpse into an exciting story, with lavish locations, intriguing plots, and monsters both real and imagined.

The series is produced by Monkeypaw Productions, Bad Robot Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.

The rest of the cast includes Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, Abbey Lee, Jamie Chung, Jada Harris, Jordan Patrick Smith, Jamie Neumann, Erica Tazel, Mac Brandt, Tony Goldwyn, Jamie Harris, and Demetrius Grosse.

Lovecraft Country will premiere on August 16 on HBO.
