WATCH: Official ‘Howard’ Disney+ Trailer

“To our friend, Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful.”

–The Walt Disney Company

Disney has released the first official trailer for its newest documentary on playwright and lyricist, Howard Ashman. Howard will be exclusively available for Disney+ users starting August 7th.

Howard Elliott Ashman was born on May 17, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland. Did you know that he worked as an editor while writing plays early in his career? However, it wasn’t until after he co-wrote the song “Disneyland” for a musical called Smile in 1986 that he would sign a contract with Disney. Ashman sadly passed away in March 1991 (due to heart failure from HIV/AIDS complications), months before the release of Beauty and the Beast. If you’re a fan of musicals and Disney music, we hope you’re able to catch this documentary. Every fan should know his story.
