An epic version of Wicked‘s showstopper, “Defying Gravity”, has just been released to lift our spirits in this trying time.

Broadway stars have been keeping busy and creative during quarantine by putting together wonderful online performances from different hit musicals, to bring healing and inspiration to theater lovers stuck in lockdown.

This latest collaboration is an excerpt from the virtual concert “Shoshana Bean and Friends” which livestreamed last July 13, 2020. It’s a rare gathering of various actresses who played the role of Elphaba through the years on Broadway and the West End. The video is also part of a fundraiser organized by Shoshana Bean to support the arts in public schools (read more about it HERE.)

Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz, is a musical adapted from the Gregory Maguire novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, that is set in L. Frank Baum’s classic novels. The musical opened in 2003 and since then has enjoyed massive success and popularity. The music and lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Prince of Egypt, Enchanted).

WickedWicked focuses on the lives of Elphaba (the Witch of the West) and Glinda (eventually the Good Witch), two very different witches who form an unlikely friendship through many trials, including being in love with the same person, dealing with the corruption of the Wizard’s government, and Elphaba’s public fall from grace and transformation into the eponymous witch. The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards and six Drama Desk Awards, and celebrate its 15th anniversary in a special concert in 2018.

The “Defying Gravity” video features the following Elphabas (in order of appearance): Shoshana Bean, Eden Espinosa, Stephanie J. Block, Alexia Khadime, Julia Murney, Lindsay Mendez, Lindsay Pearce, Rachel Tucker, Jessica Vosk, Idina Menzel, and Kerry Ellis.

“Defying Gravity” has always been an anthem for self-discovery and liberation and listening to any version of the iconic song never fails to rejuvenate and energize us. Listening to eleven amazing voices is an almost divine experience. Don’t miss the most phenomenal battle cry at the end that will truly make your soul ascend!
