Same weird family. New weird problems.

Netflix has dropped the trailer for The Umbrella Academy‘s second season, and…there’s a lot happening.

In the interest of spoilers, check out the rundown for season 2 and the trailer first:

About season 2

Five warned his family (so, so many times) that using his powers to escape from Vanya’s 2019 apocalypse was risky. Well, he was right – the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of a nuclear doomsday, which – spoiler alert! – turns out is a result of the group’s disruption of the timeline (déjà vu, anyone?). Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse. All while being hunted by a trio of ruthless Swedish assassins. But seriously, no pressure or anything.

Yeah. Lots to unpack here. Let’s try to grab some highlights, because we’re all going to be freaking out about this from now until July 31st.

  • Young Reginald Hargreeves (and Pogo!) is going to be a thing. Since the timelines are messed up, it looks like he’ll be meeting his grown kids ahead of schedule, and the level of dysfunction that’ll cause is going to be off the charts. Cannot wait for the drama.
  • That weird fish bowl…man? from the Commission. It’s The Umbrella Academy, anything goes.
  • Hazel has aged?!
  • The apocalypse and the siblings are somehow connected to the assassination of JFK.
  • Ben and Klaus’ slap fight, proving once again that The Umbrella Academy really does portray realistic sibling relationships the right way.
  • Ben is…still dead? Maybe? Either way, he can hit Klaus now, so their powers are strengthening. It’ll be interesting to see what else they can do, and if any other siblings have worked on their powers since we’ve seen them last.
  • Tons of action-packed sequences to pick out, from chases to gunfights and the usual we’ve come to expect from this series. Likely set to an amazing soundtrack. But also we get the bonus of some interesting Cold War aesthetic and technology as a backdrop.
By character:

Luther is now a boxer, and it looks like he might have a pretty big fanbase putting that super strength to use. We’ve also seen promo pictures of him in a car with a gun, so he might have ties to the JFK assassination. There’s also the promise of a team up between him and Five, which is always a good time. Not so much for them, but for us.

Diego grew his hair out, and it’s…different? (We can’t decide if we like it yet.) He’s putting his detective skills, as well as his flair for knife throwing, to work. Seems like he’ll be squaring off with those strange, Swedish assassins. It also looks as though he and one of this season’s new characters, Lila, are in prison? Or some kind of facility that they have to break out of? Not sure what kind of trouble Diego’s gotten himself into after landing in the sixties.

Allison‘s retro wardrobe is amazing; she’s channeling a bit of Grace this season. And she has her voice back! Which she used to rumor Diego into punching himself in the face. (Again, we love a fantastic portrayal of bickering siblings.) We see her kickass fighting on display in the trailer, likely against the Commission and/or those assassins. There also might be a new romance in her future, or at least some kind of heartfelt relationship with another of this season’s new faces.

Klaus has started a literal cult, because of course he has. The speculation about this started as we got more promo material, and now that it’s confirmed, it’ll be interesting to see how the show handles that. At least give the guy a break, since the last time he visited this decade, he was dropped in Vietnam and scarred for life. We’re not exactly surprised that he’s garnered quite a following with his doomsday cult. Unfortunately for him, the apocalypse arriving in ten days instead of 2019 puts a damper on things…

Five arrives last in the sixties and is horrified to learn that the apocalypse has followed them. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the Commission, since the shadowy organization seems to be more ruthless this time around. With so much hanging in the balance, and nowhere else to run, Five has to figure out why the timelines are so screwed up and what the siblings’ role in all this is. And he’s seen wielding an ax against the weird fish bowl man, so that’ll be fun to watch. And Hazel is back?! It would be cool to see the two of them join forces against the Commission.

Ben has actual screentime in this trailer! We love it. Ben deserves all of the screentime he can get, and we can’t wait to find out what exactly his story involves this season. Maybe the show will shed light on how he was killed and let him use his powers more. In any case, we do get more Klaus and Ben content, which is always a major plus. They’re keeping it mysterious as usual, but Ben’s sharp wit makes it into the trailer.

Vanya looks like she might actually be happy this season?! Please, let her be happy. We know from other promos that she’ll be crossing paths with housewife Sissy and her son. And from the group shots in the trailer, it seems like Vanya is more a part of the Umbrella Academy than she was previously. It would be really nice to let her have some meaningful interactions with her siblings that aren’t combative. Her powers will probably play a role in the plot again, though we wonder what form they’ll take and how much stronger she’s become since the last apocalypse.

But again, that’s just a tiny fraction of what we can get from the trailer, and it’s provoked more questions than answers. We’re sure every last frame will be analyzed by the time season 2 drops on Netflix…
