The Last Kingdom renewed for season 5

The Last Kingdom has just been renewed for a fifth season!

According to a report by Deadline, the epic historical series will be returning for another season of ten episodes, continuing the saga of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, played by Alexander Dreymon. The fourth season premiered on Netflix last April 26.

Executive producer Nigel Marchant made the following statement on the renewal:

“We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences all over the world. We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for season five on Netflix.”

Several of the cast members, led by Dreymon himself, also posted the announcement on Twitter during Zoom reunions.

They shared their excitement about continuing their adventures on the show. Among the cast members in the announcement were Mark Rowley, Arnas Fedaravičius, Stefanie Martini, James Northcote, Eliza Butterworth, Adrian Schiller, Magnus Samuelsson, Finn Elliot, Ruby Hartley, and Eysteinn Sigurðarson.

The fate of one of the cast members at the end of the fourth season was also called into question during the video as it has not been confirmed if the character survived the season finale.

Based on the Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, The Last Kingdom has been adapting two novels from the series for every season. While the fourth season covered the seventh and eighth books, The Pagan Lord and The Empty Throne, the upcoming season has been confirmed to be an adaptation of the ninth and tenth books, The Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.

The synopsis for the fifth season, as provided by Deadline, is as follows:

“Charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, Uhtred’s ambition will have an even higher purpose. But to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.”

The Last Kingdom is written by Martha Hillier and executive produced by Gareth Neame, Marchant and Jessica Pope.
