WATCH: Netflix’s Over the Moon trailer

Over the Moon posterNetflix has released the first trailer for Over the Moon, its upcoming animated musical adventure film.

The story centers on a young girl named Fei Fei (played by Cathy Ang) who is enchanted by the myth of the Moon Goddess, Chang’e, and so builds a rocket to meet the mysterious deity.

The movie boasts of an impressive creative team, directed by Glen Keane, the legendary animator behind Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Beast from Beauty and the Beast, and the title characters of Pocahontas and Tarzan, Collider reports. Over the Moon is co-directed by John Kahrs (Paperman) and the script was written by the late Audrey Wells. The film features music from Steven Price (Gravity) and songs by Christopher Curtis, Marjorie Duffield, and Helen Park.

The short trailer already gives a magical glimpse into a diverse and dynamic story with a few scenes that look to be traditionally animated with hand-drawn figures that look absolutely wonderful. The story obviously has roots in Chinese mythology and is an interesting mix of both modern and traditional themes. Though most of the scenes in the trailer are set in the modern world, there are a few, quick glimpses towards the end of a magical realm beyond the stars.

Though there is no exact release date for the film yet, it is set to debut in November this year.

Here is the official description of Over the Moon:

“Fueled with determination and a passion for science, a bright young girl builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary Moon Goddess.
