Warrior Nun posterNetflix has released the first trailer for its upcoming comic book adaptation, Warrior Nun.

Warrior Nun stars Alba Baptista as Ava, a young woman who wakes up with mysterious new powers and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She discovers that she is the chosen one in an ancient religious order dedicated to ridding the world of demons while the forces of heaven and earth complicate her struggles.

According to a report on Screen Rant, the series is an adaptation of the manga-style American comic book, Warrior Nun Areala, created by Ben Dunn and first published in 1994. The story follows the adventures of Sister Shannon Masters, the titular warrior nun, who belongs to a fictional combatant branch of the Catholic church. The television series was created by Simon Barry (Continuum).

Joining Baptista in the cast are Tristan Ulloa, Toya Turner, Sylvia De Fanti, Lorena Andrea, Thekla Reuten, Kristina Tonteri-Young, Emilio Sakraya, Joaquin de Almeida, and Lope Haydn Evans.

The trailer clearly sets up a very action-packed series with some fascinating mythological elements and religious symbolism. There is a notably diverse and female-led supporting cast that makes the show even more exciting and full of entertaining potential.

Here is the official synopsis of the series:

“Caught in the middle of an ancient war between good and evil, a young girl wakes up in a morgue with inexplicable powers. Her search for answers brings her to The Order of the Cruciform Sword, a secret society of warrior nuns sworn to protect the world from evil. While juggling her responsibilities as the chosen one with the normal obstacles of a teenage girl, this mysterious fantasy drama is full of mystery, action, adventure, and teenage romance, proving our main character might fight in the name of good, but she’s no angel.”
