WATCH: Netflix’s Cursed trailer

Cursed in Netflix’s upcoming young adult fantasy series set in the world of Arthurian legend but focusing on the journey of a young heroine named Nimue, played by Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why).

This upcoming Netflix fantasy series is based on the illustrated young adult book by Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller. While Langford stars as Nimue, Devon Terrell (Barry) plays Arthur, Gustaf Skarsgård (Vikings) plays Merlin, and Sebastian Armesto (The Terror) plays the evil King Uther.

Based on the trailer and the previously released promotional images, Cursed looks like a dark and gritty young adult fantasy that might also be an intriguing re-imagining of Arthurian mythology. There is the familiar theme of a group of religious extremists eradicating people with magic, probably out of fear of the power such people wield in a medieval world. The trailer is suspenseful and exciting enough and definitely a lot darker than Netflix’s more recent young adult fantasy, The Letter for the King.

Here is the official synopsis of the series:

“Based on the upcoming book of the same name, Cursed is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue, a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.”

“They came while we slept, to cleanse the world of our kind,” says a voice in the trailer, as the Red Paladins raid and slaughter the people in a village.

“Because we’re different. Because magic runs through us. Because we have what they want. Legend says this sword belongs to the one, true king, but what if the sword chooses a queen?”

Cursed season one premieres on July 17 on Netflix.
