Ewan McGregor to voice Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio

Ewan McGregorEwan McGregor has revealed that he will be voicing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo del Toro’s version of Pinocchio.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the Scottish star will continue to participate in Disney’s growing live-action canon, after voicing Lumière in Beauty and the Beast and playing the grown-up Christopher Robin in the film of the same name starring Winnie the Pooh.

In a virtual panel Q&A with ACE Universe, McGregor confirmed all this to host Angélique Roché via video chat:

“I’m playing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo del Toro’s version of Pinocchio. And that I had started working on before I left for New York, so some of that is recorded. And of course it’s stop-frame animation, so it’s going to take them a great long time to make that film. But my first part of that, which is recording his dialogue, is sort of done. There may or may not be a song that needs to be recorded. I’m not sure I’m at liberty to discuss that. Even though we’re just privately talking, you know.”

Jiminy Cricket PinocchioIn the original animated classic, Jiminy Cricket was voiced by Cliff Edwards and served as the conscience to the young Pinocchio. The character also iconically sang “When You Wish Upon a Star.” Though McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Birds of Prey) mentioned that there might be a song, it is not yet clear if it will be that song.

Del Toro discussed the project with EW back in 2012, comparing it with his Oscar-winning film, The Shape of Water and saying:

“They are both about creatures that are created and then get lost in a world they don’t understand. And they are both journeys of understanding, and journeys of evolution of the spirit. When we started working on Pinocchio we knew very clearly that we wanted to make it different in the sense that it is not just a fairy tale but a fairy tale that actually moves you and emotionally affects you. It deals with ideas that are relevant to everyone, to all mankind in a way.”

No official casting announcement has been made and no further details have been revealed by Netflix about the project.
