Smash musical heading to Broadway

Smash MusicalSmash, the NBC series about making a musical about Marilyn Monroe, is officially heading to the Great White Way.

Variety reports that the two-season TV series has inspired an upcoming Broadway show called Smash, A New Musical and will boast of an acclaimed producing team including Steven Spielberg, Robert Greenblatt (WarnerMedia Entertainment), and Neil Meron (Chicago.) The score will be provided by the Tony and Grammy-winning team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittmann and the show will have most of the songs that the team composed for the series. The musical’s book will be co-written by Bob Martin (The Prom) and Rick Elice (Peter and the Starcatcher) while the series’ original choreographer Joshua Bergasse will reprise his role for the stage show.

Spielberg shared his excitement in a statement:

“I am personally thrilled to be a part of this musical and its road to Broadway… Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it seems fitting that a new musical inspired by what we did on the show would eventually come to the stage. I’m beyond thrilled to be working with this incredible creative team and my producing partners, who began the Smash journey with me over ten years ago.”

Interest in the show was revived because the 2015 benefit “Bombshell in Concert” at the Minskoff Theatre (which sold out in fifteen minutes) was streamed last May 20 by People.com as a coronavirus benefit for The Actors Fund which provides a safety net for professionals in the performing arts.

Smash - Season 2The performance was introduced by Academy Award-winner Renée Zellwegger and during the intermission, Julie Klausner (Difficult People) moderated a reunion with the members of the show’s original cast members including Megan Hilty, Katharine McPhee, Christian Borle, Debra Messing, Jaime Cepero, Will Chase, Brian D’Arcy James, Jack Davenport, Ann Harada, Jeremy Jordan, Andy Mientus, Leslie Odom Jr., Krysta Rodriguez, and Wesley Taylor.
