REVIEW: Siren – 3.08: “Til Death Do Us Part”

This photo just screams “Maddie sadness” and I don’t like it!

If you’ve read my previous reviews, you know that I’m a sucker for parties, big events, dances and the like in episodes. I always feel like they’re equal parts fun, equal parts anxiety at the end because something awful’s bound to ruin their good time. But this in turn sets the plot in motion and might even provide character development. So I knew just from seeing the title of “Til Death Do Us Part,” that something big was about to happen, I just didn’t know what. Am I happy with some of the events that transpired? Honestly, not really. So, brace yourselves, a big portion of this review might become a rant.

To Have and To Hold (the Siren Song) from this Day Forward: I couldn’t write this review without talking about Tia and the siren song. This week we saw both her and Hunter venture to Russia to gain allies in their fight. And I gotta say, her scenes were captivating! From “reuniting” with a Russian military worker that was sweet on her to then using/killing him to gain access to the siren song file, I was enthralled. If she used her manipulation skills for good, she would be unstoppable. Plus, I believe it was made known that the Russian military was the one that used the siren song as a weapon in the opening scene in Ukraine? Unless that was actually her doing and she’s trying to cover her tracks. Either way, whenever I see Tia on land, I’m always intrigued how she has the ability to get whatever she wants. Now let’s see how the inevitable showdown with Ryn’s and Robb’s tribes will be handled.

Ryn and Maddie: the pairing that deserve better.

For Better or Worse: Okay, this is the part in the review that basically becomes a rant. In this episode, we saw a major shift in the Polymarine throuple. We’ve known that Ben and Maddie have been on the outs since the beginning of this season, but Ryn and Maddie are still going strong. Ben and Ryn, on the other hand, are a completely different story.

With Ben’s recent stem-cell-acquired abilities, he’s basically half-mer at this point (as we see gills sprout out of his sides after being in the water too long), which in turn has made Ben and Ryn the “ultimate couple” in the show’s eyes. Personally, I’m not buying it. All the continued Ben and Ryn scenes are doing is making it apparent as to who the true endgame couple is going to be: Ben and Ryn. For instance, Ryn and Ben get a raunchy sex scene and several kisses, while Ryn and Maddie get a peck on the cheek? We know that Maddie and Robb are technically dating, but Ryn and Maddie never technically broke up! I can’t help but wonder if the writers are trying to sweep this pairing under the rug and pretend like Raddie never happened? Okay, not like they never happened, since “Maddie is love” has been a constant – more like, not nearly as strong of a love as Ben and Ryn have been. But a flashback sequence depicting all of Ben and Ryn’s toxic relationship moments really just screams “love” doesn’t it. Must be, since Ryn gave Ben a ring and Ben wants to be wherever Ryn is, be that land or sea.

I know I’m not the only Siren fan that’s been disappointed in the way Polymarine’s been handed lately. A lot of other fans have been questioning the trio’s actions this season. Depending on where the rest of the season goes, I might do a deep dive of their relationship and list out all the good representation and the bad. If anyone has any examples, feel free to send them my way!

“What is marry me?”

In Sickness and In Health: This episode of Siren however, did finally bring up a story-line I’ve been dying to know more about! Chris is back! Due to the military moving locations (because of the siren song or other reasons?), he’s forced to move out and accept the real world. But he’s actually doing a lot better than when we last saw him! Helen suspects it’s because Donna’s body has finally been laid to rest again. Which, come to think of it, makes sense. Since, I think when we were introduced to memory-loss Chris, the military was using Donna’s stem cells for Elaine’s treatment? Here’s hoping that the series focuses on another story-line of mine I need answered: the whereabouts of Nicole! I know it’s primarily due to the actress’ schedule that she’s no longer on the show, but what did the military do with her? We still have no idea! Are there any other story-lines you’re dying to know more about before the season end?

We need more of this Sinatra and Kesha loving duo!

Til Death Do Us Part: Of course, I have to mention Xander in this episode! We saw him do many a good deed throughout this episode. From simply including Frank Sinatra in the wedding playlist (Helen mentioning Kesha in response to this was adorable!), stealing Donna’s body and Helen’s relatives from the military for her, helping Chris move out and just doing his best man tasks – he did it all! He’s always been that character in the show that’s always around to lend a helping hand and he’s there when you need it. So of course, the show had to have him answer a phone call at the end of the episode with the dreaded siren song on the other end! If you’re like me and very concerned about Xander right now, I looked up the synopsis for next week, and thankfully, he’s alive! But it looks like he has a strange illness? First the demise of Polymarine and now Xander? I’m hoping the final two episodes of the first batch of season three ends to the majority of the fans’ liking!
