Netflix orders quarantine anthology series Social Distance from OITNB team

OITNB Social DistanceNetflix has ordered a drama anthology series called Social Distance which chronicles the current quarantine situation.

Deadline reports that Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan and her team including Hilary Weisman Graham, Diego Velasco, Tara Herrmann and Blake McCormick are working on the series. Velasco (Teenage Bounty Hunters) will direct and serve as co-executive producer while Weisman Graham (Kidding, Bones) will write all the scripts and serve as showrunner.

The team produced the series while still respecting the rules for health and safety, the writers working remotely and using virtual means to film the cast and crew. The members of the cast act and film themselves from their own homes.

In a statement, the producers described what made them come up with the project:

“Our job as storytellers is to reflect reality, and in this new, bizarre, bewildering reality we are all experiencing, we feel passionate about finding connection as we all remain at a distance…We’ve been inspired to create an anthology series that tells stories about the current moment we are living through — the unique, personal, deeply human stories that illustrate how we are living apart, together.”

“The experience of social distancing is currently universal, but no individual story is the same. Through a broad spectrum of tales and moments, some seismic and some mundane, we hope to capture a moment in time.  And we hope that Social Distance will help people feel closer to one another.”

No other details about the cast or plot of the series have been revealed.

While the concept is intriguing enough, given the current crisis, it might be too soon for art to imitate life. Audiences are turning to streaming services like Netflix for escapism and relief from the strange new world they are living in so they might not be drawn into a show that might mirror their struggles too accurately.
