‘Agent Carter’ Character Will Guest-Star on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ S7

If you’re still buzzing after the news that season seven of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will premiere in just over a month, get ready for some more good news: EW just revealed that Enver Gjokaj will be reprising his Agent Carter role on the show this season, as Daniel Sousa. Take a look at a new image of Agent Sousa below:

Says Gjokaj of the surprise chance to play Sousa again:

It wasn’t anywhere near my brain. I would’ve been thrilled at any moment for it to come back, but I think as an actor you don’t have time. You just have to move on to the next project.

When we last saw Sousa onscreen in the Agent Carter finale, he and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) herself were moving towards a romantic relationship, while Sousa was tasted with running Los Angeles’ SSR bureau. That was in the 1940s, of course. So that means our SHIELD team is confirmed to not only be going back to 1931, but eventually a time when they can run into Sousa.

Co-showrunner and executive producer Jed Whedon points out that the time travel element adds something extra fun for Agent Coulson, who’s always been a “fanboy for SHIELD history”. The team will get to “walk right into” that history this season, and bringing back Sousa was “a good opportunity to hit that note with Agent Coulson.” Gjokaj adds the intriguing tidbit that it turns out that Coulson and Sousa are “very similar” characters, which made playing scenes where they interact unexpected and “really fun”.

Another fun aspect: Jed Whedon and co-showrunner Maurissa Tancharoen already knew Gjokaj from his time on Joss Whedon’s show Dolllhouse, as well. Given that connection, Tancharoen says, “We’re very aware of what Enver is capable of. So we were just feeling like we could dive a little deeper with Sousa.”

As a big fan of both Agent Carter and Sousa in particular, I’m extremely excited about this news and looking forward to Agents of SHIELD‘s final season even more now. Fans will only have to wait until May 27 to watch the season premiere on ABC.
