Showtime has released the first trailer for Penny Dreadful: City of Angels, its newest supernatural horror series inspired by the world of the Penny Dreadful series which starred Eva Green and Josh Hartnett.
This series is set in a different time period and with a new cast of characters but it still contains elements from the first show such as gruesome crimes, supernatural elements, and demonic adversaries. According to a report by Collider, the show stars Daniel Zovatto (Fear the Walking Dead) and Nathan Lane (The People v. O.J. Simpson) as two LAPD detectives investigating a vicious murder that is more sinister than it seems. The trailer also shows Natalie Dormer (The Tudors) as a mysterious and dangerous demonic figure, possibly the main antagonist of the show.
Other cast members include Kerry Bishé (Halt and Catch Fire), Adriana Barraza (The Strain), Michael Gladis (Mad Men), Jessica Garza (The Purge), Johnathan Nieves (See You Yesterday). Interestingly, Rory Kinnear, who played Caliban in the original Penny Dreadful, is also a cast member. Whether he is reprising his role in this series or if he is playing some new incarnation of the character has yet to be seen but his inclusion in the show is certainly intriguing.
Here is the official synopsis:
“A spiritual descendant of the original Penny Dreadful story, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels opens in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Lane) become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism. Before long, Tiago and his family are grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart. Penny Dreadful: City of Angels explores an exciting mix of the supernatural and the combustible reality of the period.”
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels premieres on April 26 on Showtime.
