Breaking Down the Bat: A First Look at Robert Pattinson as The Batman

Robert Pattinson as The Batman

It’s been years since director Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) was given the reins to direct DC’s next solo Batman film. In 2017 it was officially announced that Reeves would helm The Batman, and during that time Ben Affleck was still in line to star. A lot has changed since then, as Affleck has stepped down from the role after playing the character in Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League, and Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) has taken the role over. Additionally, Warner Bros.’ DC extended universe has vastly changed direction since its dark Snyder-filled days, having released Aquaman, Shazam!, and most recently Birds of Prey (or Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey). But there’s always room for a little darkness, as evident from last year’s Todd Phillips’ Joker and now this literally dark first look at Robert Pattinson as The Batman.

Released on Vimeo, The Batman director Matt Reeves has finally given us a first look at this new take on the Dark Knight. Featured below, the video only gives viewers a look at Batman’s chest armor, chest emblem, some of his cape, and a partial view of his cowl. There’s still a lot left to be revealed, especially the length of Batman’s bat ears, but based on the camera test footage it seems Reeves and company have taken some inspiration from the Arkham Knight video game series and maybe even Injustice. In addition to that, many have already pointed out something potentially interesting about the emblem. Check it out:

The Batman – Camera Test from Matt Reeves on Vimeo.

In Detective Comics #1000, a commemorative anthology issue released in early 2019, writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats) shared his story “Manufacture For Use” with pencils by the great Jim Lee. “Manufacture For Use” served as a brief, bittersweet origins tale seeing Bruce Wayne track down the gun that was used to murder his parents so that he may melt it down and mold it into his iconic Batman chest emblem. Why, you might ask? Well, as Smith’s take on Bruce Wayne so simply puts it, “So, the metal that broke my heart as a child? That same metal will protect my heart as a man.”

Upon continuous glances, the Batman chest emblem seen in the preceding camera test footage looks like it may be compiled from pieces of a gun. Now of course this may be a wild stretch of the imagination, though many on Twitter and other sources have pointed this out as a possibility. It could all be just wishful thinking that Reeves would reference this particular source material that only came into DC Comics canon last year. For all we know the chest emblem may simply serve as a Batarang similar to Robin’s ‘R’ in the first season of Titans. We’ll have to wait and see.

Matt Reeve’s The Batman is set to release June 25, 2021. In the meantime, feel free to let us know what you think of Robert Pattinson as Batman in the comments below.
