Halle Bailey Cast As Ariel in Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’

We saw a whole new world with Aladdin‘s recent live action adaption. Now soon, an additional beloved Disney animated film is going to be a part of the world that is the live action Disney treatment.

It was revealed on Thursday that Grownish‘s Halle Bailey will be swimming into the role of Ariel in the live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

The director of the upcoming film, Rob Marshall, had this to say about the casting of Bailey:

“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role.”

Production is set to start in early 2020; no official release date has been set.

Bailey joins other confirmed cast members for the film like Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina as the voices of Flounder and Scuttle respectively. Melissa McCarthy is in early talks to portray the villain, Ursula, as well.

What are your thoughts on the casting announcements thus far for the live action Little Mermaid? Both McCarthy and Bailey casting news have been hit with major hate and controversy. This writer wishes nothing but the best for Halle – I think she completely embodies Ariel and I can’t wait to hear her sing “Part of Your World” (especially the reprise on the rock!).
