REVIEW: Shadowhunters – 3.19 “Aku Cinta Kamu”

Izzy’s finally getting the love & credit she deserves

With just two episodes left until the series finale (thanks for reminding us, Freeform), you just know that we’re getting down to the wire for every current ongoing plot.

I was fortunate enough to meet Katherine McNamara over the weekend at Chicago’s Heroes and Villains Fan Fest, and she confirmed there’s going to be more book references and dark Clary, and 3B will continue to push the envelope so to speak in comparison to seasons past. Plus, can confirm – she is the sweetest individual I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Shadowhunters

Imagine if these J.C’s added JC Chasez into the mix. Talk about “Tearin’ Up My Heart”!

Two’s a Party, Three’s a Crowd: A crowd at the Bone Chandelier, that is. But before I talk about that highly anticipated scene, I just really want to commend the writers on dark Clary. In this episode, Kat really shined and this change from the books in having Clary be connected to Jonathan instead of Jace, continues to be such an interesting take! First, you have the enhanced sibling dynamic with both Jonathan and Clary more connected by this darkness and rune they share. Granted this makes everything much more at stake and sinister for everyone involved, but that’s what makes it so fun! Jonathan and Clary’s bond in the book was nothing compared to this! And also to have a female character have such bravado and boldness as dark Clary does, is just a genius move in my opinion!

When reading City of Lost Souls, the scenes within the Bone Chandelier were always my favorite. And I just knew that having Jace be the timid character versus Clary’s forwardness in the Clace make out scene would be amazing to see. I sound very anti-book, I know. But I’m just really enjoying the changes they’re giving Clary and allowing for Team Evil to be flipped on its head. I could go on and on about how they’re handling this storyline! How does everyone else feel about it?

Shadowhunters

Our Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Breaking Up Is Hard to Do: Okay, so if breaking up is hard to do, well, watching the aftermath of said breakup is just painful! For Malec fans, the entire episode consisted of flashback scenes (some new and some from past episodes) and grieving the loss of the relationship. But knowing that a wedding is in sight, I personally wasn’t too affected by these scenes in this episode. What did catch me off guard, however, was realizing that their relationship wasn’t restored by the episode’s end. Granted, I know that that would be way too far fetched (especially given the attention to detail with the breakup scene itself). I think I just need to get in the headspace that these episodes were filmed prior to knowing a cancellation was in sight. So all of the plot-lines that still have loose ends will and should be complete by the series end. Regardless, my heart went out to Magnus during this episode and I really hope his father’s manipulation isn’t going to have too much of a hold or effect on him. We already have dark Clary, we don’t need a dark Magnus, too!

Sizzy: Just Add Heavenly Fire: As each episode passes, we get even more and more Sizzy development! And who knew just a little Heavenly Fire was all we needed to spark Sizzy!? When it comes to Simon and Isabelle, I really appreciate how far these characters have developed over the seasons, and how they’re finally seeing each other in the romantic sense. As I mentioned above, these episodes were filmed way before Shadowhunters was cancelled. So no way was this pairing something the writers quickly rushed through before the show was over. We first were introduced to Simon and Isabelle’s characters in the series when mundane Simon needed to be “babysat” by Isabelle. “And Simon, he’s kind of nerd hot,” Izzy had told Clary at the time. There immediately was that “I think you’re really attractive but you’ll never see me that way” between the two (or more so just Simon). They went their separate ways, found new relationships and that was that…until now.
I think they’re realizing that they both really care about each other and they could in fact be something more. Just look at their Clark Kent and Lois Lane conversation (and comparison). Overall, I just know that I’m not going to be disappointed when it comes to these two.

The next new episode of Shadowhunters, 3.20: “City Of Glass” airs next Monday at 8/7c on Freeform. The promo for it can be viewed below.

First off, ew, that thumbnail. And with this technically being the season three finale, I’m really curious how this episode is going to end given that no storyline has really been nearly tied up yet. Thank the Angel that we have that 2 1/2 hour series finale.
