WATCH: ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’ Teaser Trailer

scary stories to tell in the dark

We’ve finally got our first trailer for Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark…and it is, in fact, scary. Due to hit theaters this summer, the film adaptation of the popular book series has been building up the hype ever since the project was announced. But of course a film with so much nostalgia around it would also invite an appropriate dose of skepticism, too. Despite the creepy teasers that debuted over a month ago, we still weren’t sure what kind of tone Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark would have. Would it be cheesy? Silly, with a hint of dark comedy?

Now that we’ve seen the first trailer, we’re excited to learn that the film is taking on these classic tales with a dark and serious tone. The teaser trailer sets the mood perfectly, complete with an eerie, slowed down piano version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Some may complain that these creepy versions of popular children’s songs is an overdone trope for horror film trailers, but the effect is always chilling. Especially for Scary Stories, which is a children’s book series.

The film is set in 1968, which adds an interesting layer to the events of the film, tying it to a tumultuous year in American history. An old book is found in an abandoned mansion, authored by a woman named Sarah Bellows; her scary stories start to become all too real for the group of teenagers who’ve had the misfortune of discovering her book. The trailer hints at a few of the most popular Scary Stories like the Pale Lady and Harold. And that girl with the spider in her cheek, which will continue to give everyone nightmares. It’s a relief that the film is going to do these stories justice by giving them the horror film they deserve. If anything, it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, directed by André Øvredal and produced by Guillermo del Toro, will be released in theaters August 9, 2019. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think of it!
