Marvel Studios has released a new trailer for Avengers: Endgame, highlighting the massive emotional scope that was left in Thanos’ wake, the legacy these heroes have left, and what it will take for them to avenge the world they failed to save.
“This is the end of the path I started us on.” This is a line Tony Stark said to Nick Fury in Avengers: Age of Ultron, in that film it was in terms of the threat Ultron posed, but seems more appropriate for here in the larger meta sense that Avengers: Endgame is the end of the MCU as audiences have known it that started back in 2008 with Iron Man. We started down here with Iron Man, and it looks like it will end with him.
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.
Marvel Studios has said they would only be featuring footage from the first 30 minutes in the marketing and based off the teaser trailer, the Superbowl spot, the Captain Marvel end credit scene, and this trailer that appears to be true. Marvel has earned such an amount of trust from its audience, and Avengers: Infinity War raised the anticipation bar so high that they don’t need to market the big money shots to get people in. They have the audience already. So instead they are highlighting the characters and the journey they have been on that the audience has followed for years. They purposely show footage from Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger to highlight how far these characters have come since their origin stories.
Also highlighting the past films may be a hint at this film’s plot. The past seems to be a major theme of this film. Marvel isn’t just reminding audiences of past films, but possibly hinting that this will be a time travel story like many have speculated.
How will the Avengers beat Thanos this time? Well, they didn’t have Ant-Man and Captain Marvel last time around. Those two will add some much-needed firepower to the team and interesting dynamics to interact with the characters. While Avengers: Infinity War split the team up into three groups, it looks like here the idea is to assemble the remaining heroes left and they will do whatever it takes to save the world.
Fun details you may have missed include
- Hawkeye teaching his daughter to shoot a bow is a nice reference (maybe foreshadowing) that she will take on the mantle of Hawkeye similar to the character of Kate Bishop.
- The Avengers are suited up in their new matching suits. These could be the team’s space suits but based off the red/white color scheme these could be Quantum Realm suits, since they share a striking similarity to the suit Hank Pym wore in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
- Rocket Racoon on War Machine (which is a pretty cool team up) and Rocket is rocking an outfit similar to his original costume from the comics.
- Thor doesn’t seem to be threatened by Captain Marvel, who is posed as the strongest Avenger. Good for Thor, being secure in his masculinity.
- While not a big moment, when the team is suited up we have Tony Stark and Steve Rogers reunited.
Marvel Studios also included a new poster, highlighting all the remaining heroes that now make up the Avengers that must team up to stop Thanos.
