WATCH: Superhero Horror Film ‘Brightburn’ Trailer

There’s no shortage of superhero films these days, but what about superhero horror? Blending horror with classic superhero tropes, Brightburn offers a new take on the genre with a terrifying origin story.

What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? In this horrific take on the classic superhero trope, a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) adopts a baby who came from the stars. While they attempt to raise the boy (Jackson A. Dunn) to use his powers for good, an evil begins to grow inside that he unleashes.

An ingenious premise if there ever was one. We’ve seen villain origin stories and how antiheroes are made on screen, but Brightburn promises something completely different. While the film borrows heavily from Superman’s own backstory, Brandon Breyer is anything but. (That smile at around the 1:08 mark in the trailer…it’s unsettling.) Seeing these two genres come together should make for a horrifying and bloody superhero film.

Brightburn is directed by David Yarovesky, and written by Mark and Brian Gunn. James Gunn and Kenneth Huang are producing the film. It’s slated for release on May 24th of this year. You can check out the trailer for Brightburn below!
