Spoiler-Free REVIEW: Disney’s Aladdin North American Tour

Welcome to Agrabah weary travelers! The Aladdin North American Tour has officially arrived in Costa Mesa and will continue to run at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts until March 23rd. Whether you’re a fan of the 1992 animated movie or not, Aladdin is a fun night out for everyone. It’s also a great introductory show if anybody in your party is seeing a production for the first time.

Kathryn’s rating: Still having withdrawals. Can I go back?

Despite some changes, the production stays true to the original animated script. You get all of the original songs plus some. Once the overture ends, you’re welcomed by Genie and the adventure begins! Here’s the breakdown.

Act One:

  • “Arabian Nights”
  • “One Jump Ahead”
  • “Proud of Your Boy”
  • “These Palace Walls”
  • “Babkak, Omar, Aladdin, Kassim”
  • “A Million Miles Away”
  • “Diamond in the Rough”
  • “Friend Like Me”
  • Act One Finale: “Friend Like Me” Reprise/”Proud of Your Boy” Reprise

Act Two:

  • “Prince Ali”
  • “A Whole New World”
  • “High Adventure”
  • “Somebody’s Got Your Back”
  • “Proud of Your Boy” Reprise II
  • “Prince Ali” (Sultan Reprise)
  • “Prince Ali” (Jafar Reprise)
  • Genie’s Exit: “Somebody’s Got Your Back” Reprise
  • Finale Ultimo: “Arabian Nights” Reprise/”A Whole New World” Reprise

The show is about 2.5 hours long (with a 15-minute intermission) but it doesn’t feel like that at all. It’s a high-energy production that shouldn’t be missed by any fan. Keep in mind that there are also usages of  camera flash, pyrotechnics, and dry ice effects. Did I mention there’s also plenty of sword fighting?

Favorite Numbers:

  • “Proud of Your Boy”
  • “Friend Like Me”
  • “High Adventure”
  • “A Whole New World”
  • “These Palace Walls”

Aladdin is one of my favorite shows for a reason and I hope you get a chance to fall in love with it the way I have. Oh! Don’t forget to listen for the references and clap backs. They’re fantastic. Let yourself get lost in the show.

If you’re waiting for the live-action film adaptation, that comes out on May 24th.
