X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer – Is This The End?

20th Century Fox has released a new trailer for Dark Phoenix, the next and maybe last installment, in the X-Men film franchise with a major reveal and a high stakes yet personal story at the center.

[Warning: Mild Spoiler Below]

Fox released a brand new trailer for Dark Phoenix (or X-Men: Dark Phoenix as it will be released in other countries) just in time to be attached to screenings of Captain Marvel later next week, and the internet is talking, but maybe not for the best reasons. After two release dates pushed back (originally set for November 2, 2018, and then February 14, 2019), reshoots, and the Fox/Disney deal on the horizon it appears that the X-Men, the series that helped start the superhero wave audiences have been enjoying, can’t drum up much excitement.

Set a decade after the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, the X-Men have become world heroes. After a mission in space goes wrong, Jean Grey begins to lose control of her abilities, which unleashes the Phoenix Force. The more dangerous the Phoenix becomes, the more the X-Men are torn on what to do: save Jean or kill her.

This is the second time the 20th Century Fox has tried to adapt the iconic Dark Phoenix Saga to film, the first time being X-Men: The Last Stand back in 2006. Simon Kinberg, the writer/director of Dark Phoenix, also wrote X-Men: The Last Stand and there seem to be repeated elements on the surface. Charles Xavier hiding part of Jean Grey’s past, a confrontation between the X-Men and the Phoenix at Jean’s childhood home, and the fact that the Phoenix persona wears a long coat.

Yet it does appear Kinberg has changed some elements. Obviously, without the Cure subplot, they can focus more on the Phoenix storyline. They are keeping some cosmic elements from the comics and that is what triggers Jean’s transformation into the Phoenix. Jessica Chastain has been cast as a mysterious alien character who appears to be an amalgamation of Lilandra of the Shiar Empire, Mastermind who in the comics manipulated Jean into becoming the Phoenix, and finally, Cassandra Nova who was a psychic parasite with a history to Charles Xavier.

The biggest reveal from the trailer and the Entertainment Weekly interview after, was the confirmation that Mystique will die at the hands of the Phoenix early on. Many have wondered why Fox would choose to reveal this bit of information in the marketing, as it would be a big twist. It seems this will happen early on the film, and this major death will cause the X-Men to split apart, similar to Captain America: Civil War or the X-Men comic book Schism. Members like Beast and Magneto appear to be on the side of killing Jean, while Cyclops and Xavier want to fight for their friend with other members taking a side. It takes the big cosmic storyline from the comics but does ground it in a more human-centric story about friends and family.

The killing of Mystique doesn’t seem too surprising in hindsight. Jennifer Lawrence has seemingly wanted out of the role for years, and it was a miracle she came back for this film as it appeared she was done after X-Men: Apocalypse. But her death may not be the only one. The film has undergone reshoots and it appears this will be the last film in the Fox Marvel timeline before they are rebooted and incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The filmmakers make have other major deaths planned throughout the film. Making Dark Phoenix the end may mark a dark final chapter for the X-Men franchise, which began 19 years ago.

Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on June 7, 2019. This is the same weekend that X-Men: First Class opened back in 2011, and after eight years it appears this new saga is finally coming to an end.
