Remember how we got the news of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. being renewed for a surprise seventh season, even before we heard much of anything about its upcoming sixth season?
Now series star Clark Gregg, a.k.a. Phil Coulson (and also some mysterious character we’ve yet to meet), has told Den of Geek that he thinks that seventh season will be it for the show. Said Gregg, “That’s the word I’ve heard. The announcement I read was, two more seasons, six and seven.”
Of course that’s not an official announcement from Marvel or ABC, but it does sound pretty conclusive. And to be honest, that might not be a terrible thing. Seven seasons is a fantastic run – and many shows that have gone past that number tend to fall rapidly downhill in quality after season seven (The X-Files comes readily to mind, for instance).
Meanwhile, Gregg “can’t wait” for viewers to get the chance to watch season six of Agents of SHIELD. He added, “People who have been on the journey with me and with Phil Coulson are going to get something very, very different.” And for a series star to say that about a show that has successfully reinvented itself so many times over the years, well – it has us intrigued.
Catch Clark Gregg as a younger Coulson in Captain Marvel, opening next week – and catch SHIELD season six airing this May on ABC.
