Goyo: The Boy General to premiere on Netflix in January

GoyoFilipino historical film Goyo: The Boy General will be premiering on Netflix in January 2019.  The film was previously released on September 5, 2018.

The film shows the last days of the young hero, Gregorio del Pilar, and the continuing struggle for Philippine independence. But the film isn’t just about the life of a single historical figure but also about a particular period in Philippine history, a crucial pause in the Philippine-American War when the leaders of the revolution argued among themselves about the future of a nation. Other key figures in history such as Emilio Aguinaldo and Apolinario Mabini come to life in the film and are portrayed as complex characters who make difficult decisions. The film boasts of gorgeous cinematography (particularly during the fateful Battle of Tirad Pass), powerful performances by the cast, a moving musical score, and some tense action sequences.

The review on Esquire magazine describes the film thus: “A somber sequel, a more reflective film than Heneral Luna, a coming-of-age story set against war and political intrigue, and a character study of a flawed and ultimately fallible hero.”

Goyo is written, directed, edited, and scored by Jerrold Tarog, who was also behind the historical epic, Heneral Lunawhich centered on the life and achievements of General Antonio Luna (played by John Arcilla) and which already started streaming on Netflix last November 15, 2018.

Here is the description of the film on the Netflix site: Brash ladies’ man Gregorio “Goyo” del Pilar rises to become one of the Philippines’ youngest generals in this historical epic sequel to Heneral Luna.

Goyo: The Boy Heneral stars Paulo Avelino as the titular general as well as Carlo Aquino, Mon Confiado, Epy Quizon, Gwen Zamora, Empress Schuck, Alvin Anson, and Rafa Siguion-Reyna.
