Blu-Ray REVIEW: Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again

Mamma Mia
Ten years have passed since the Mamma Mia! film. The newly released sequel, Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again, the ABBA-filled musical, has still got that whimsical magic that we know, love, and can’t help but sing along to. Set both years in the future from the original film, as well as many years in the past, Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again, is just as much of a sequel as it is a prequel.

Our original cast – Sophie, Tanya, Rosie, Sam, Bill, Harry, etc.- find themselves looking back on past memories, mistakes, and how to move forward when faced with difficult challenges along the way. Throughout, we also see just how things started for a young Donna (Lily James) back in 1979. We see her friendship with Rosie and Tayna, her impression of Greece, and of course her first interactions with young Sam, Bill, and Harry. Sprinkle in some ABBA songs and you have such a heartwarming film!

I thoroughly enjoyed Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again. Never would I have thought we’d get a sequel, 10 years later at that. But it feels as if no time has passed at all in a way. By incorporating Donna’s past, we see how the Meryl Streep of the first film came to be, as well as Sophie’s three potential fathers. James does a marvelous job at portraying a younger Donna; heck each of the young women do! They seamlessly pick up their characters’ mannerisms and their present counterparts. I would say the same for the young men, but honestly, it took me forever for me to realize who was Harry and who was Sam. Speaking of, seeing this film honestly makes me want to see the first one, so Donna’s past can come full circle for me. Anyone else agree?

Song-wise, this ABBA-filled film has all your favorite hits! Some are songs that have never been featured before, and some are new renditions from the previous film. Because one can never have enough “Mamma Mia” or “Dancing Queen.” The musical productions of the film are a wide range of fun, heartfelt, and even ridiculous in the best way possible. To list a few that stood out to me: “When I Kissed the Teacher” (Lily James impressed me in her first scene!), “Waterloo,” “One of Us,” and of course “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen.”
