If you’re like me and not well versed in comics-to-screen adaptations but you’re still really intrigued by it all, The Gifted is an absolute great starting point!
With its first season having aired on FOX during TV’s fall season, it’s of course time for the release of the 13 episodes on DVD.
The Gifted is set in a world where the X-Men have disappeared, and after a catastrophic event years past involving mutants, finds lives for them difficult in this present day. We are introduced to the Strucker family, who seem like your ordinary human family. Until one night, after an event at school causes the Strucker teens, Lauren’s and Andy’s, mutant abilities to emerge.
Now the family is on the run from the ever-imposing government. It’s then they’ll meet several mutants along the way to safety, and do whatever it takes to survive.
Overall, the first 13 episodes allow you to get introduced and acclimated to the universe The Gifted is set in, its characters, and the powers the mutants possess. As mentioned above, you do not need to know anything about X-Men comics/characters going into the series. The universe of the show is set where all the X-Men have dispersed and have practically become a myth at that! Are some of the characters based on previously established comic book characters? Yes. But does the show allow for even the novice to be able to follow along? Double yes!
From a DVD standpoint, it’s your standard TV show multiple disc set, containing all 13 episodes of the first season (Disc 1: Episodes 1-4) (Disc 2: Episodes 5-8) (Disc 3: Episodes 9-13). In terms of special features that are on the DVD set, well – there aren’t any. Which honestly, if I was a diehard fan of the show, I would be very disappointed about. The fun part about getting TV series on DVD is to see behind the scenes footage, interviews with the cast, deleted scenes, etc. Anyone else agree/disagree on this?
But that aside, I really enjoyed this season, and am so glad that I finally saw it. Perhaps this will open my eyes to everything Marvel/DC?
