HBO has released some details about the upcoming finale of the second season of the sci-fi epic, Westworld.
The title of the final episode will be The Passenger and it was written by showrunners Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and directed by Frederick E. O. Toye. The official synopsis is as follows:
“You live only as long as the last person who remembers you.”
It’s an intriguing summary but also one that encapsulates many of the season’s themes such as death, immortality, consciousness vs. physical identity, and the reliability of memory. And I have to admit, it also reminds me of the premise of Pixar’s Coco. I never thought I’d ever talk about Coco and Westworld in the same sentence but here we are.
So many theories have been discussed and dissected on the web during the course of this eventful season including hints of Futureworld, Westworld actually being in China, and even a link to Game of Thrones. There’s only one episode left this season to confirm or deny these theories, though with the show being renewed for a third season, there will certainly be some mysteries left unsolved.
In the trailer released for the finale, we see the paths of the four main players converging on the Valley Beyond. Dolores and Bernard are walking together while the Man in Black finds his way there as well. Maeve has miraculously escaped from captivity, no doubt thanks to Ford’s help from last episode, though she looks quite worried about what is coming for them. There are many flashes of scenes and knowing how Westworld plays around with timelines, we can never be sure if these are taking place in the past, present or future.
For some reason, Logan features prominently in the trailer, hinting that the drug-addled Delos heir might still have a big role to play in the fate of the park. The last time we saw him was when he was babbling about the real world to Akecheta in Kiksuya. There are some glimpses of the Ghost Nation too, so hopefully we will get to see Akecheta reunite Maeve with her daughter and also fulfill his destiny, whatever it is that Ford has in store for him.
At one point, Bernard asks for Ford’s help, a surprising development considering how Bernard tried to banish Ford’s consciousness from his in the last episode. There are so many loose ends that still need to be tied and these will surely be done in both complexly philosophical and excessively violent means, at least judging from the trailer.
The season finale of the second season of Westworld will air on Sunday on HBO.
