REVIEW: Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep4 – Buried

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep4 – Buried

On this week’s Fear the Walking Dead, Alicia, Luciana, and Strand deal with the loss of Nick while more is revealed about what went down in the baseball stadium and how things started going wrong.

Fear the Walking Dead continued to experiment with styles in this episode not just by alternating between timelines but also by showing the reactions of the characters through the lens (literally) of Althea, who filmed Alicia, Luciana, and Strand, asking them questions about their lives, and about Nick. There was something more painful and intimate about the scenes being filmed in a documentary-style and you really got to see the different characters’ perspectives on the events in the baseball stadium. There was a stark contrast with the hope they still somehow held onto and their despair and rage in the “present” storyline.

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep4 – BuriedNick and Luci were planning a future together and Strand, despite his survivor’s instincts and prepared getaway car with supplies, decided to stick around, form an attachment, and see how things go. Madison was also willing to work things out somehow and we still don’t know what happened to her. Fear the Walking Dead succeeds in showing us that in such a bleak world, clinging to hope can be a truly dangerous thing. Humanity’s all well and good if you’re still breathing. But survival has to come at a cost. And only those willing to pay it can last long enough.

Even if we still get to see Nick in the flashbacks, everything is tinged with tragedy knowing how he ends up. Seeing him smiling and hopeful only drives the dagger deep into the wound.

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep4 – BuriedThe flashbacks also featured a trip to a waterpark which was, of course, filled with walkers. Fear the Walking Dead has tried to offer us a variety of creative settings to ruin with the prospect of flesh-eating zombies and the show has succeeded. Naomi and Alicia wander into such a park, once a place of fun and laughter, and are confronted with horrors. They make it out alive because they’re both smart and capable and we learn a bit about Naomi as well.

After sharing their stories and their grief, the three main characters lead the newbies to a location where Morgan thinks they are going to bury Nick. Turns out it’s where they have a hidden stash of weapons and supplies which they plan to use to get their revenge on the Vultures. They still end up burying Nick, of course, and while bringing out their supplies, a revelation is made that connects the main group to John Dorie.

Fear the Walking Dead, S4 Ep4 – BuriedHe sees a bag that belongs to Laura, the woman he’s been searching for. It contains a pistol identical to his and though Laura never gave him her real name, he is sure that the bag and gun belong to her. And in the flashback, it is revealed that Naomi was the owner of these items. Alicia reveals that Naomi was one of those who didn’t make it out of the stadium alive and John falls to his knees in despair.

(Fear the Walking Dead co-showrunner Ian Goldberg told Cinema Blend that there was more story to be told about the events of the stadium but he didn’t exactly confirm if Naomi was dead or alive in the current timeline.)

John didn’t decide to join the revenge quest just yet but this might be sufficient motivation for him to do so. Morgan also decided to stay with him despite his conviction to stay on his own. He has formed a bond with the cowboy, in spite of himself, and they are probably off to an interesting journey.
