WATCH: The first trailer for Taron Egerton’s Robin Hood

Robin Hood posterThe first, action-packed trailer has been released for the latest incarnation of Robin Hood.

After his success with the Kingsman films, Taron Egerton will be appearing as one of literature’s most recognizable characters, Robin Hood.

He stars in the latest film based on the character (after Ridley Scott’s 2010 film starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett). Originally titled Robin Hood: Origins, the film has gone with the simpler title of Robin Hood.

Egerton stars as the titular hero along with Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) as Little John, Jamie Dornan (Once Upon a Time) as Will Scarlett, Eve Hewson (The Knick) as Maid Marian, and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One) as the villainous Sherriff of Nottingham.

Director Otto Bathurst discussed his take on the familiar legend in a report by Collider:

“You don’t become a legend for 800 years if you’ve just stolen a few bags of money from rich people to give to the poor. In my mind, Robin Hood was this sort of seriously militarized anarchist revolutionary, a freedom thinker and a truth seeker. And the more I got into the story, it just became startling how utterly relevant it is to what’s going on in society now.”

Robin Hood egerton foxxEgerton also compared the film to The Hurt Locker. So, this version will clearly be a grittier version of the legend (though Russell Crowe’s take was already pretty gritty). From the trailer, this version seems to have the frenetic energy and spectacle of Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur.

Here’s the official synopsis of Robin Hood:

“Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance.”

Robin Hood will be released on November 21, 2018.
