Robert Downey Jr. reveals all-star cast for The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle titleThe star of the upcoming fantasy adventure, The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, has revealed the prestigious members of the film’s voice cast.

We’ll be seeing more of Robert Downey Jr. beyond his time as Tony Stark in the Avengers: Infinity War when he embarks on a different epic journey. He is set to portray Dr. John Dolittle, a doctor who can speak to animals, based on the works of Hugh Lofting. Joining him in live-action roles are Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, and Jim Broadbent.

Oscar-winner Stephan Gaghan (Traffic) will serve as both director and screenwriter with work by Thomas Shepherd. The first book featuring this remarkable doctor was published in 1920 and this was followed by the Newbery-award winning The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle in 1923. Several more novels and short story collections followed.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle castIn a recent tweet, Downey proudly revealed the star-studded voice cast:

  • Emma Thompson as Polynesia, a parrot;
  • Craig Robinson as Fleming, a mouse;
  • Rami Malek as Chee-Chee, a gorilla;
  • Carmen Ejogo as Regine, a lioness;
  • Octavia Spencer as Dab-dab, a duck;
  • Tom Holland as Jip, a dog;
  • Ralph Fiennes as Barry, a tiger;
  • Marion Cotillard as Tutu, a fox;
  • Kumail Nanjiani as Plimpton, an ostrich;
  • Frances de la Tour as Ginko-Who-Soars
  • John Cena as Yoshi, a polar bear;
  • Selena Gomez as Betsy, a giraffe.

It’s really fun to see that both Iron Man and Spider-Man will be working together again, though in very different circumstances. And it’s interesting to note that John Cena is continuing his voice-actor career after starring in Ferdinand. With the success of live-action films like The Jungle Book, the creation of these animal characters on-screen is bound to be convincing and remarkable. It will be truly a treat to see Downey take on this eccentric and intriguing character.

The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle is set to be released on April 12, 2019.
