‘The X-Files’ Celebrates “The Scully Effect”

Are you a woman who was influenced by Special Agent Dana Scully, MD., to join law enforcement, or pursue a job in a STEM-related (science, technology, engineering, and math) field? If so, it turns out you’re in good company.

FOX has released a video celebrating the astonishing effect of Gillian Anderson’s iconic character on the lives of many female fans. There are interviews from fans, her colleagues and X-Files writers and crew, and thoughts from the actress herself, as well. Check it out below:

Though I’m not in law enforcement or STEM, as a female ‘X-Phile,’ I loved this video. It resonated with me. I’ve always loved Scully – especially her intelligence and capability. And as someone who writes (mostly for my own entertainment, but still), her character has helped shaped the way I think about women characters. I would not be exaggerating to say that when I start watching a show with a female lead for the first time, I judge the writing of said lead by how she compares to Scully. If the characterization doesn’t measure up, I’m less likely to keep watching.

The X-Files returns this week to Wednesdays at 8/7c on FOX.
