HBO has revealed a first look at their adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s dystopian classic Fahrenheit 451 with new images of the film’s lead cast and a mesmerizing teaser trailer. The cautionary tale about censorship, propaganda, and the destruction of knowledge couldn’t be more timely.

“…Depicting a future where media is an opiate, history is outlawed, and “firemen” burn books.”

Michael B. Jordan portrays Montag, one such fireman who begins to question a society where books have been banned. In the first images of his character, we see the “fireman” at work, flamethrower in hand beside Michael Shannon, who stars as Montag’s seasoned fire chief Beatty. The second image of Montag hints at a quieter moment, alone in a room awash in dark colors, his face only lit by a single flame.

The aforementioned Beatty appears in the second image, a commanding presence in what appears to be his office, surrounded by awards as a testament to his service. We also get a good look at the firemen’s uniform—black fatigues that carry hints of the previous 1966 adaptation but with a sleeker, more menacing vibe. The room drenched in blue and red similar to the image of Montag above seems to be a glimpse of the film’s futuristic aesthetic.

In the final image, Sofia Boutella’s character, Clarisse, is in a noticeably brighter environment where most of the details are left out of focus. Clarisse is described as an informant who “comes between the competing interests of Montag and Beatty.” Though much of her character is shrouded in mystery, fans of the book will be intrigued to see just how her role in the story comes to life in this adaptation.

The most exciting—and haunting—reveal is the film’s first teaser. With just a few faceless shots of the firemen at work and the pages of literary classics catching fire, this modern adaptation promises to be visually stunning and relevant in its message. It’s the perfect time for this story to get the refreshing update it deserves. And it might encourage those who haven’t read the novel to give it a try.

Fahrenheit 451 will premiere exclusively on HBO this spring. Check out the teaser trailer below and let us know your thoughts. Have you read the book? Are you hyped for HBO’s take on it?
