REVIEW: Once Upon a Time, S7 Ep 5 – Greenbacks

Once Upon a Time, S7 Ep 5 - Greenbacks

Tiana’s past is explored in this week’s episode of Once Upon a Time, while Roni also makes a significant discovery about her true identity.

Tiana, or Sabine as she is known in Hyperion Heights, has thus far been a supporting character in Jacinda/Cinderella and Henry’s story so it was refreshing to get to know her better. The flashback sequences showed her as a princess whose family had gone bankrupt. She struggled to live up to her father’s heroism and in so doing, discovers in herself the capacity for self-sacrifice and nobility. It was also great that her story, at least for now, was not focused solely on romance.

We also got introduced to the Once Upon a Time version of Dr. Facilier, as suave and shady as he was in The Princess and the Frog. He takes Tiana’s firefly ruby and somehow incorporates it into his supernatural schemes. The setting and costumes are lovely, as usual, and I look forward to learning more about Tiana’s journey from sheltered princess to leader of the rebellion.

Once Upon a Time, S7 Ep 5 - GreenbacksHer Hyperion Heights arc was less compelling but a lot of fun, as she tried to rebel against Victoria Belfry through delicious beignets. I have to say, I wish we got to sample some of those pastries as simply watching them made my mouth water. Sabine and Jacinda got into a bit of a fight at the beginning but sorted everything out by the end of the episode, with the latter investing in a food truck for her roommate so they could continue their tasty enterprise.

(There was a small and not-so-subtle reference to Wreck-It Ralph and I wonder when we are going to see his story on Once Upon a Time).

It was a relief that Henry did not, after all, end up in the arms of Ivy, another supporting character who proved more fascinating than expected in this episode. There are always hidden layers to characters of Once Upon a Time, and it was good to see some of these being developed. Appearances can be deceiving and Ivy appears to be playing the long game, manipulating both her mother and our heroes. I’m not quite sure what her true agenda is, but it will probably be revealed in time.

Once Upon a Time, S7 Ep 5 - GreenbacksSuspicious of Ivy’s motives, Roni meets up with her and is led to the hidden chamber where the individual we suspect to be Mother Gothel is kept prisoner by Victoria Belfry. Roni then makes a significant discovery, a photo of her and young Henry. She doesn’t recognize herself or the boy but adult Henry does, and this might be the beginning of Roni remembering who she really is. With Rumple being awakened in the last episode, it looks like characters will be breaking the curse little by little.

And, as it turns out, Ivy knows she’s Drizella! So the twists keep coming on Once Upon a Time, as the carefully constructed cursed land is gradually falling apart. I’m looking forward to seeing Rumple and Regina act on their newfound knowledge about their identities, with Henry’s help, and soon, Detective Rogers will know who he is as well, and then Victoria Belfry will have a lot to contend with.
