Writer/director Alex Garland made his very strong directorial debut in 2015 with Ex Machina, a hard science fiction film featuring an original screenplay by Garland which earned him an Oscar nod that year. Now, Paramount Pictures has premiered the first trailer for his next directorial effort: Annihilation.
Based on the novel by Jeff VanderMeer with an adapted screenplay by Garland, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman (Jackie), Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin). The story sees Natalie Portman’s character referred to solely as The Biologist and a team of other experts set out on a dangerous expedition “where the laws of nature don’t apply” (IMDb).
Considering Garland’s success with Ex Machina, his admirable work on previous scripts including 28 Days Later, and a stellar cast attached, Annihilation really looks like something to look forward to.
