Supergirl Casts Amy Jackson as Saturn Girl

Supergirl keeps rounding out its cast for season 3, as TVLine just reported today that Amy Jackson has been cast as Saturn Girl. Her character is described as a “strong-willed hero” who “uses her telekinetic ability to help those in need.” And it seems she will arrive on Earth just in time to help Kara with whomever might be in need there. In the comics, she is a member of the Legion of Superheroes alongside Mon-El, and in fact creates an antidote called Serum XY-4, which allows him to escape the Phantom Zone from time to time.

Given this information, it’s likely that her casting signifies the return of Mon-El (Chris Wood) himself. But will he be the same when he returns? And what is his connection to Saturn Girl? Perhaps they’ve already formed the Legion and are just good friends and heroic comrades. Or perhaps, all shudders aside, Supergirl has another love triangle on its hands.

Now that we’ve discussed the character, there is some information of note about the actress. Amy Jackson is a British model who became famous in Bollywood after being discovered by Tamil director A.L. Vijay, who cast her in his film Madrasapattinam. She played a white woman who fell in love with an Indian man in that movie, but she has since taken on several roles as an Indian woman herself and caused some well-deserved controversy in that regard.

It doesn’t seem that Saturn Girl is meant to Indian, so at least it’s not another case of the show casting a white woman in a role they originally intended for a woman of color – but it may still be a cause for discomfort. She is not the only new cast member this season, however. Odette Annable joins as villain-to-be Reign, Chad Lowe will be playing cult leader Thomas Coville, Erica Durance is taking over the role of Alura from Laura Benanti, and Carl Lumbly is portraying Daddy Manhunter himself: M’yrnn J’onzz.

Supergirl‘s flies back into CW’s Fall line-up on Monday, October 9th at 8/7c.
