After releasing a short teaser for the upcoming Marvel series The Punisher, Netflix has also released a first look at the character in costume.
Jon Bernthal stars as the titular character, Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher, who made his debut in the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil. Bernthal appears grimy and gritty, clad all in black but with the distinctive skull logo on his suit. There is a grim determination in his face as he stares straight into the camera. Castle is determined to enact his own, brutal brand of justice on the various criminal elements in New York City, an approach unlike that of Matt Murdock/Daredevil, which exacerbated their conflict in Daredevil season two.
A short teaser trailer for the series was released last weekend after the final episode of the first season of The Defenders, the highly-anticipated, street-level version of The Avengers which featured Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand a.k.a. Iron Fist joining forces to fight the evil corporation, The Hand.
The clips shows Frank hitting the ground with a sledgehammer while speaking about his tragic past:
“The past is more than memories, it’s the devil you sold your soul to. He’s coming. He’s coming to collect.”
As the camera zooms out, one sees that the image formed by the sledgehammer was the iconic Punisher logo.
Bernthal will be joined in the series by Daredevil alum Deborah Ann Woll, reprising her role as Karen Page. The character formed a bond with Castle during his stint in Daredevil so it will be interesting to see how their connection will develop in Castle’s own series.
As previously reported, the series will also star Ben Barnes as Billy Russo, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Micro, and Amber Rose Revah as Dinah Madani.
While no release date has been set, The Punisher is due to be released on Netflix later this year.
